Red Tail Lager

Red Tail Lager

63 Blade Chainsaw

Red Tail Lager is an American style lager brewed by the Mendocino Brewing Company at low temperatures with traditional lager yeast, two-row barley malt, hops and water for a mild alcohol content of 4.5% ABV.

This lager gets its inspiration from the Spirit of the Hawk. According to Mendocino, it took them 21 years for them to make a lager they felt worthy of the Red Tail name.

The illustrations on the bottle and packaging are attractive and well done, and I love hawks!

I’ve been getting tired of American style lagers brewed with corn and rice and badly needed to experiment with a purer form of the style – this red tail American hawk is just the brew I needed to try.

Onto The Method

7.0/10 - The Classic

1.5 – Appearance - A darker pale amber north of golden. Noticeable carbonation and an opaque white head that lingers just above the brew.

1.0 – Aroma - Mellow, mild malt fragrance with a teeny tiny hop signature.

1.5 – Taste - A definite step up from the classic American pale lager recipe. It has a crisp, clean and smooth flavor all the way through.

1.5 – Palate - A light to medium feel with a clean start and a smooth finish.

1.5 – Overall - A real pleasant approach to the American classic formula. The company boasts using no adjuncts such as rice and corn, and they have every right to feel proud and glorify their clean and basic ingredients.

Red Tail Lager 6.0/10 Blades - The Hammer – the booze - At 4.5% abv, the hammer is quite low but works nicely with the clean ingredients; and though it taps lightly it will not get you hammered.

6.0/10 Blades - The Knife – digestibility - A smooth knife that is not filling and works in balance with its medium body.

6.0/10 Blades - The Spider – the lift - A slow and smooth ride up to the brain finally saturating the mind at the conclusion of the third brew. A bit slow but sticks around for a full head and easy night.

8.0/10 Blades - The Motor –can you handle it? - It’s easy to stay in control with this reliable; quality constructed lager. The alcohol content is low but steady and I feel hydrated and refreshed as a result of the clean water. After the conclusion of the six pack, I could have gone for hundreds of miles more on this ride.

The Chainsaw

30.0/50 Blades - The Buzz – Red Tail Lager is a great brew for a relaxed Sunday night. It’s a clean buzz that is well maintained and easy to ride. Red Tail Lager has a low hammer and smooth knife with relaxed spiders, but this brew and buzz is about the simple recipe and quality ingredients, particularly the water. I can drink this brew all night long without getting drunk, and if that’s what you need, then this is a good buzz.
