Old Speckled Hen

Old Speckled Hen Beer

Old Speckled Hen beer is a Fine English Ale with a golden syrup at its base and a combination of Pale and Caramel/Crystal malt and Northern Brewer hops for an IBU of about 45 and an alcohol content of 5.2% ABV.

Old Speckled Hen beer was first brewed by Morland Brewery in 1979 in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Abingdon, Oxfordshire based car company MG. Green King brewery continued its production in 1999 in its Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk brewery.

The company’s website follows a commissioned painter through a comical inspirational story that is pretty funny and worth a look.

The bottle is handsome and its clarity shows off the brew's unique and attractive color. Though it appears that there may be a number of comments out there complaining about the skunky, stale beer caused by the clear bottle during its long trans-Atlantic journey to the U.S. I think I got one of the good shipments.

Onto The Method

8.5/10 - The Classic

2.0 - Appearance – Great looking jewel-copper brown with a full creamy head and minimal carbonation.

1.0 - Aroma – Surprising yet faint sweet malt fragrance.

1.5 - Taste – A real nice and interesting balance of malt and bitter lightness, with the balance being the star. Follows through well and gets better with every tasting.

2.0 - Palate – This is the type of medium weight I really enjoy. Smooth, easy and clean with full substance that is not filling.

2.0 - Overall – A nicely balanced and flavorful brew that is attractive and tasteful with just the right amount of weight.

Old Speckled Hen 7.5/10 Blades - The Hammer – the booze -With a 5.2 abv enwrapped in a well balanced delivery mechanism, the hammer is firm and reliable.

5.0/10 Blades - The Knife – digestibility - A well maintained knife that has matured with the care of an experienced handler. While all the ingredients combined with the alcohol make for a great bodied brew, there comes a point where the knife can no longer cut through its body.

6.0/10 Blades - The Spider – the lift - the spider rises with a decent speed that is nice and warm, takes its time without keeping anyone waiting. It's a warm and full rush that sticks around for the remainder of the evening, though in a calm and restrained fashion.

5.0/10 Blades - The Motor –can you handle it? -While it scores well with all other qualities, I couldn't commit beyond the fourth bottle. It achieved its nice buzz but couldn't rise higher and made me aware of that my night was finished.

The Chainsaw

30.0/50 Blades - The Buzz – Old Speckled Hen beer is a great warm buzz that reminds me of the holidays. While it made clear that it was over after the fourth beer, the buzz did continue and my evening wasn't over, just my drinking. It reaches its peak at a certain point and can't go higher even with more drinking, and that can be fine. This is a beer that I'd love to try on draught, and definitely at an English pub. It's unlikely that my experimentation with this brew ends here and deeper clinical research is warranted.
