White Hawk IPA – White Hawk Select IPA
97 Blade Chainsaw
White Hawk IPA is a creation from our excellent beer makers at the Mendocino Brewing Company, coming direct from their Hopland Brew Pub in California by brew master Don Barkley. It is spiced with American West Coast Cascade Hops and English Fuggles Hops for a satisfying count of 60 IBUs and a rock star beer alcohol content of 7% ABV .
A few months earlier I tried their Red Tail Lager, and while it didn't score high on the chainsaw scale primarily because of its low alcohol content, it pleased me with its approach to clean and basic ingredients. That established relationship set the foundation for high expectations for this brew.
This Independence Day three day weekend was purposely lined with a couple of American beers and a classic English brew for the fun of it. I reserved Budweiser American Ale for tonight's fourth of July celebration and began the weekend on Thursday with Newcastle Brown Ale and had the chance to enjoy White Hawk IPA last night.
Yesterday's day off was immensely enjoyable – yard work was gratifying, I bought a bunch of weak but fun fireworks with my oldest girl, put some dogs and burgers on the grill for some good people, got the kids to bed reasonably early, and ended up getting laid as midnight approached! By the time I had my first beer, I was satisfied with the gift of good living.
Onto The Method
9.5/10 - The Classic
2.0 - Appearance – Rich and full wild foam over a deep bronze body – sticky lacing with head retention all the way through the end of the serve.
1.5 - Aroma – Strong citrus and pine fragrances that inspire the mind and tingle the soul. Alcoholic vapors are evident and welcoming.
2.0 - Taste – Great combination of bold malt characters coupling with a powerful hop disposition. Beyond balance, this union works together like a steroid fueled tag team wrestling match!
2.0 - Palate – A rich medium body showcases the tight blend and finishes dry with an acidic hop bite.
2.0 - Overall – A delicious and bold beer with a strong malt profile and powerful hop selections coming together for a kickass Mutherf*ing drink!
9.0/10 Blades - The Hammer – the booze -The Hammer slams down with a powerful 7% abv that comes on strong while smoothly blending with its satisfying recipe.
10/10 Blades - The Knife – digestibility - A high alcoholic kick combines with a smooth and relatively light body making it easy to process and shred right through the gut and into my life's blood – the fuel detonates throughout my body exploding into a radiant glow reminiscent of the 1985 movie The Last Dragon - “I'm the Master.”
8.5/10 Blades - The Spider – the lift - Rising vibes commence at the end of the first with a talkative and euphoric lift. It continues to rise through the middle of the six pack, and maintains its sweet journey throughout the night.
10/10 Blades - The Motor –can you handle it? - Riding this machine through the finally of the six pack brings some sadness – each ounce of this liquid gold is savored and cherished right up through the very end. When I'm in the mood to keep going after the six pack I'll throw in another selection or two, but this beer was so good I didn't want to ruin the flavors in my mouth and ended the night with the final bottle.
The Chainsaw
50/50 Blades - The Buzz – White Hawk IPA is a tremendously rich and satisfying beer with a bold malt character and a powerful hop profile. Along with its powerful alcoholic strength, this elixir provides the fuel for a reigning knockout combination! The beer feels like an appropriate reward for celebrating the gratification of a good life and the pursuit of independence. The buzz is complete with rising euphoria and a full satisfaction of living and blends in a twist of laughter and dementia for spice. The only downside of this buzz is that the beer is so good, finishing the six pack becomes a traumatic event and the great flavor ruins the possibilities for any other beers. These bottles should come packaged in packs of 37! White Hawk IPA chainsaws the night!

In the month after initially reviewing White Hawk IPA, I've taken a few days off from trying out new beers, and this was the brew I picked up to relax with. I bought several six packs of White Hawk IPA and enjoyed them over various weekends and in different situations, and it always provided a sweet lift as well as good tastes. Plus, I could drink these guys non-stop and not get completely wasted.
Last weekend a buddy of mine came up from down South, and on the first night we polished off a case of these bad boys just talking and catching up on old times. At one point before I told him that this beer was one of my top selections, he added, "This is great beer, and it really gives me a good buzz!"
For being my downtime beer and giving my guest a great buzz, the Chainsaw gets an additional five blades - sending White Hawk IPA to the top of my Best Beers List! - Chainsaw the Night!
