Angler Black Lager from Barley Creek Brewing Company
66 Blade Chainsaw
Angler Black Lager is an American made German Swarzbier style lager brewed by the Barley Creek Brewing Company in Tannersville, Pennsylvania. According to their beer menu and website, it is made with five Malts including Caramunich, Chocolate, Munich, Pils and Black Malt followed by a spicing selection of Hallertau and Tettnang Hops showcasing a Bavarian yeast for a beer alcohol content of 5.0% ABV over an original gravity of 1052.
Angler Black Lager was originally a seasonal selection until the brewery decided to bottle it as part of their variety pack. It's brewed year round and always on tap at the brewery.
Onto The Method
6.0/10 - The Classic
1.5 - Appearance – An attractive dark brown chocolate with minimal lacing and carbonation. Some retention on the head which ultimately forms a tan ring over the serve. It benefits from a violent pour for more action and activity.
1.5 - Aroma – Sweet roasted malt base dominates the olfactory senses aided by its aggressive bear like masculinity.
1.0 - Taste – A mixture of sweet and tart malt base followed by a lively yet subtle hop zing.
1.0 - Palate – A smooth and easy drink that goes down nice on the first serve but continues a bit heavy on later servings.
1.0 - Overall – Angler Black Lager is heavy on the sweet roasted malt side and gets filling pretty quickly, but is otherwise a smooth drink with a subtle yet interesting hop profile over a surprisingly tart malt base.
5.0/10 Blades - The Hammer – the booze - Moderately built at a 5% ABV, this hammer is ample and does its best to work with its otherwise heavy body.
5.0/10 Blades - The Knife – digestibility - Its heavy malt construction dulls attempts at sharpness - it's easy and smooth for the first drink but gets heavy rather quickly. For better processing, a slower drinking session benefits the system while giving the alcohol opportunity to work.
7.0/10 Blades - The Spider – the lift - While it takes some time for the knife to process, spiders begin a slow and comfortable rise in the middle of the third serve. A warm, silly and fuzzy smile presents itself on the face and giddiness continues.
8.0/10 Blades - The Motor –can you handle it? - It's quite easy to ride out this selection through the end of the six pack. A sweet buzz and a slower session is what it takes to handle this machine.
The Chainsaw
35.0/50 Blades - The Buzz – Angler Black Lager is a heavy Swarzbier type lager that's sweet on the taste buds while offering an interesting hop profile. Its smooth characteristic makes pounding this beer easy which quickly compromises the digestion of such heavy elements. After adjusting to the heaviness and slowing down the session, the drink is allowed to perform its function, and the buzz takes on a sweet, light and silly persona that brings a smile to the face. A moderate hammer is challenged by a dull knife, but a readjustment of ones perspective allows the spiders to shine while the motor carries the good sensations through the end of the night!
